Printer, laptop, and office kit for a one-person shop
A practical HP laptop + printer setup and the Office Depot consumables that keep invoices, permits, and job photos moving — because a website is not the whole shopfront.

A live website does not print a permit, a packing list, or a sitting-fee contract. Most one-person trades still need a computer that is not a cracked phone, a printer that can do a packing slip at 6:40 a.m., and a re-supply run that is boring on purpose.

Three kits, not a fantasy office

Laptop: buy for the job, not the spec sheet
- Plumber / HVAC / trades: You need reliable Windows, a real keyboard, and enough battery for a supply house Wi-Fi portal. You do not need a creator laptop. A current HP Pavilion or equivalent 15-inch is the boring choice.
- Photographer: RAM and screen matter more. If you edit on this machine, skip the cheapest 8 GB configuration. If you edit on a desktop already, the laptop is a traveling inbox — buy accordingly.
- Consultant: Webcam, microphone, and a lid you are not ashamed to open on a Zoom. Still not a reason to buy a gaming chassis.
Refurbished business machines (HP EliteBook and cousins) are often the better spend if you know how to check battery cycle counts. If you do not, buy new and keep the box for the return window.
Printer: inkjet vs laser for a one-person shop
- HP OfficeJet / inkjet all-in-one: Fine for color quotes, the occasional form, and scanning licenses. Ink is the trap — buy the larger cartridges when the per-page math wins, and do not let it sit dry for two months.
- Laser: Better if you print contracts every day and rarely need photo-like color. Heavier, usually louder, fewer “why is it magenta” mornings.
Instant-ink subscriptions can be cheaper if you actually print. They are a tax if the printer is a prop. Read the pause/cancel terms.
A shopping list you can copy
- Laptop (only if the current one cannot run a browser and a PDF).
- All-in-one printer with a known supply path.
- One extra set of ink or toner, stored in the bag, not “I’ll order it later.”
- 20 lb copy paper, not a boutique cotton sheet, for drafts.
- 500 cards with the new domain and you@yourdomain.com — after those exist.
- A manila system or a single box for licenses, insurance, and W-9s.
Put the new URL on the next card order, not the last one you still have 400 of. Waste is cheaper than two identities.
